A Baby Show at Clyffe Hall
Fetes at Clyffe Hall have been part of village life for a hundred years and more. Today we feature an event which took place in 1910 – 100 years ago.
The picture shows a group of mothers with babies in the grounds of Clyffe Hall. We can get some idea of fashions of the day. Babies, clearly, wore white dres like garments and this would have applied to both girls and boys. Mums wore full length skirts or dresses and a hat was essential.
A zoom in makes this clearer.
There is a degree of poignancy to this image for of the dozen babies shown, four died before the age of five during a diphtheria outbreak.
As these pages make clear, we are always hoping to learn more at Market Lavington Museum. If you can name any of the mothers or babies then do get in touch. You can leave a reply on this blog or you can email the curator.
