A dressmaker’s dummy

Amongst our collection of dressmaking items we have small things like Pins and needles and a rather larger cardboard dummy, dating from about 1960.

This Perfect Fit Form-o-Matic model is made from several sheets of cardboard, which can be pinned together to replicate the exact measurements of the person for whom a garment is being sewn.

The surface of the cardboard is printed with various things from recommendations, imperial to metric conversion tables and instructions on how to put the dummy together.

There is a lower section for the hips area of the body.

It does look to involve a lot of patience and effort to build an exact replica of someone’s body shape. We will not be trying to adjust it at the museum as the connecting pins have become rather rusty over the last sixty years.
