A hay knife

At Market Lavington Museum we have a selection of tools used in the agriculture of yesteryear. This one is a hay knife.

The blade is nearly 80cms long and the wooden handle measures about 45cms. It would have been used when loose hay was made into haystacks and the farmer needed to cut off a slice of compacted hay to feed his animals.

These three haystacks were built on Lavington Hill over a hundred years ago.
