A Receipt from W Hopkins and Sons

The firm of Hopkins feature from time to time on these pages. We have seen a written quote for a job at West Lavington Church and here we see a receipt for work at that church.

Receipted invoice from W Hopkins and Sons of Church Street, Market Lavington

The date this was paid was 14th January 1911 – 101 years ago and it seems quite extensive work was needed on the church in our neighbouring parish of West Lavington.

The most expensive items were the new part pennant stone floor at almost £10 and a similar price for an asphalt path.

Altogether over £40 was spent. This was not far short of a farm worker’s average wage in 1911. On that basis one could estimate the cost as equivalent to about £20000 today.
