Market Lavington Museum

A soldier’s dream

On 5th April 1917, Trooper Fred Kellaway was still in a military hospital in Sheffield. Nan sent him this card.

It is especially pleasing to our museum that the card has been localised to Market Lavington. This was not unusual with comic cards. We even have one with a sea bathing picture purporting to be at Market Lavington.

The message on the reverse was written upside down and at an angle. This was quite common practice at the time, to make it less likely that the postman would read the it.

Despite being in hospital, Fred Kellaway is obviously able to write letters. We may have better news about him next time, when we see the last of these cards.
