Market Lavington Museum

A very old door lock

In our museum collection, we have this door lock.

It is made of iron and is partly surrounded by some of an oak door. It comes from Broadwell Cottage, 23, White Street in Market Lavington. This building has undergone changes to its outside appearance over the years, but was once a thatched dwelling as shown on this 1950s postcard. It is the middle one of the three homes on the right hand side of the card.

The lock predates this postcard by several centuries. Our records state that it dates from the 17th century.

This is the back of the lock.

It was donated to the museum along with a bunch of three iron keys on keyrings.
