Market Lavington Museum

An old hoe

Market Lavington had a blacksmith’s business at Broadwell run by the Merritt family, who were also very involved with running Market Lavington’s Prize Silver Band. (See John Merritt Senior.) A little further along White Street was Gye’s Yard, where Charlie Burnett was the wheelwright and his brother Bert Burnett was farrier and blacksmith.

In the museum we have an old hoe head. Its record card says that it was made by a local blacksmith, but we do not know which one.

It is made of iron and is very heavy and quite corroded. It is 24.5 cms long and dates from the late 19th century and that is about all we know about it.
