Market Lavington Museum

Civil Defence – welfare

The Civil Defence Corps was organised in sections, such as headquarters, warden, rescue, ambulance and first aid and welfare. Mrs Teresa Gale of Market Lavington was involved with the welfare section. We have her armband at the museum.

This section had a responsibility to help with accommodation, feeding and clothing people who might be made homeless, maybe due to evacuation during an emergency.

Maybe Mrs Gale received her welfare armband sometime after her enrolment as it does not feature in the list of uniform items she had then.

We do have her beret, valued at 7s. 9d.

Civil defence was organised locally at county level and we have an envelope addressed to the man in charge for Wiltshire.
