Dad’s Army

It is the summer of 1939 and just about everybody knows that war is inevitable. The 4th Wilts Territorials are being put through their drill.

The 4th Wilts Territorials on High Street, Market Lavington in the summer of thirty nine.

They actually look very smart and upright, not a bit like the ramshackle group we all know and love from the TV series, Dad’s Army. However, it is far from clear what weapons they carry. Could they be sticks? Or perhaps they are stirrup pumps?

One civilian, at the extreme left seems determined to get into the picture.

The location is quite hard to make out, for it is a little bit of High Street which has changed considerably. The wall behind the troops used to stand in front of the old Parish Room. These men are roughly where the entrance to the nursing home is now.

We have no names so if you recognise anybody in the photo we’d be delighted to hear from you.
