Market Lavington Museum

Jack Welch’s village history

The father of our museum founder, Peggy Gye was James, known as Jack Welch, . Both he and Peggy took a great interest in Market Lavington and its history.

In the museum, we have this book, which contains several pages of information about the village, handwritten by Jack.

He starts by explaining

Not only is Jack’s historical information a useful addition to that given in Village under the Plain (on sale at the museum and in the Post Office) but his comments on the ‘present situation’ relate to his time of writing, in the early to mid 1950s – 70 year old history in itself for folk reading it today.

Jack’s contributions are likely to add colour and detail to future blog entries about the village.
