Knitting needles

We have featured knitting in our blog A knitting pattern, sold at Mrs McInstry’s shop in Market Lavington. That pattern, for little girls’ jumpers and cardigans required Quickerknit yarn, which we believe to have been thicker than 4 ply and finer than double knitting wool.

There would have been nothing quick about knitting with this pair of needles from our museum collection.

They are size fifteen needles, measuring about six inches in length and still in their Faudel maker’s sleeve. They are made of bone and probably date from the early 20th century. A little research suggests that Faudel’s may have ceased trading in the 1930s.
