At Market Lavington Museum, we have a selection of the many Dig for Victory leaflets produced during the 2nd World War to encourage and support people locally and across the country to produce as much home grown food as possible.

One of these concerns itself with onions and related crops.

Onions were deemed to be a useful vegetable because they could be stored for up to six months, if the right sort were grown. The Ministry of Agriculture leaflet recommended suitable varieties for storing.

It also gave information on cultivation and on problems that could arise, before giving similar advice for growing other members of the onion family – leeks, shallots, garlic, chives and Welsh and tree onions.
