We tend to think of ladies playing football to be a modern phenomenon, but a couple of photos in Market Lavington Museum show that not to be the case.
This undated picture shows the teams for a match on a Whit Monday.
The reverse of the photograph informs us that the teams were of married ladies playing against unmarried ones.
The album of local photographs put together by our museum founder, Peggy Gye, also incudes a picture of unmarried and married ladies’ teams. This one is said to have been taken at a match which was part of the 1953 coronation celebrations. The teams are not named, but Stan Cooper was the referee.
