Maybe a mattress needle

We have this item in Market Lavington Museum. Its records name it as a mattress needle dating from the 1950s.

mattress needle

We have seen similar objects called sewing or stitching awls used by upholsterers and cobblers and it would certainly appear to be sturdy enough to push thread through thick materilas.

Please do leave a comment if you have further information on how such a needle was used.
