Mincemeat – 1879

It’s not long until Christmas – time for making your mince pies. Nowadays, people often buy jars of mincemeat from the supermarket but, if you like to make your own, you could try our recipe from over 140 years ago.

Annie Welch (nee Earle)’s cookbook has more than one recipe for mincemeat. This one is dated 1879 and credited to someone with the surname Painter, we think.

Most of the ingredients are as to be expected and, in this instance, are written legibly. We probably wouldn’t expect to have plums as one of the fruits today. This recipe ends with ‘brandy to taste’. Another mincemeat recipe in the book requires both brandy and sherry.
