Renting from the manor


In amongst the file of paperwork relating to the Gye family businesses, we have this receipt dating from 1875. Mr William Gye paid the Rt Hon Edward Pleydell Bouverie, of Lavington Manor, the sum of £4.10s annual payment for the rental of stable granaries. (The picture below is a Vanity Fair cartoon of him, which we have in the museum.)

Our black and white photo is of Gye’s Yard in 1906. We do not know whether any of this property was rented from the manor estate at the time or whether the receipt was for a totally different site
