Rifle corps questions

The Volunteer Rifle Corps members were expected to show progress in their shooting skills and could move through three classes of ability. We have a two sided handwritten question and answer sheet about this in Market Lavington Museum.

So, the answer to the question, ‘What size target do you fire at in 3rd class?’ was ‘Four feet wide and six feet (almost 2 metres) high. The centre was three feet in diameter with a one foot diameter bullseye.

You needed 40 points to pass from 3rd to 2nd class and 30 points to move on up to 1st class.

Other questions included, ‘Do you ever fire without putting up the danger flag?’ and ‘How do you size a company?’
