Market Lavington Museum

Volunteer opportunities

We are always looking to new volunteers so if you would like to join us please take a look at the opportunities below or contact us and let us know how you can help.

Stewards

Stewards work in pairs. The role entails opening the museum and greeting visitors and doing a little bit of housekeeping. Stewards will be given opportunities to become familiar with the collections and training will be given on the accessioning system. The most important attributes of  the stewards are to be friendly, personable and enjoy meeting people.

Trustee

Market Lavington Museum is a charity and the role of the trustees is to ensure that the museum is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit. Trustees look after the museum and act in its best interests, they manage it responsibly with care and skill so that it will be available to future generations. The trustees meet regularly to maintain the museum fabric and plan for the future. This requires a wide range of skills but most importantly a commitment to the future of the museum. Currently the meetings are early evenings in someone’s house.

Data entry

Market Lavington Museum has entered the digital age and we have a lot of records which need to be entered onto the museum computer. This requires some training in the use of the Modes program and also a level of IT competence.

Accessioning

During the closure of the museum there has been a build up of artefacts that need accessioning. This is a skilled process and training will be given. It involves taking legal ownership of an item in order to take care of it and it assigns a unique number that will link each object to the information about it. It is the very beginning of an artefact’s life in the museum.
